NEW ORLEANS, LA – Johnny Walsh, 25, is headed to federal prison for more than five years after being caught twice with handguns despite being a convicted felon. U.S. Senior District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle handed down the sentence yesterday, March 8, 2023, adding another chapter to the city’s ongoing struggle with gun violence.
Walsh pleaded guilty to two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, the first incident occurring in March 2022 and the second in August 2022. Each time, authorities say, Walsh was packing a handgun equipped with a high-capacity 50-round drum magazine – a particularly dangerous combination on the streets of New Orleans.
Judge Lemelle didn’t mess around. Walsh received 64 months – over five years – on each count, to be served concurrently. That means he’ll be behind bars for at least five years and three months. Upon his release, Walsh will also face three years of supervised release, and will be required to pay a $200 special assessment fee.
Federal authorities are framing the case as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement and community organizations. The Department of Justice launched a renewed focus on PSN in May 2021, emphasizing community trust, prevention, and strategic enforcement. But for many in New Orleans, these programs feel like a revolving door – catch, convict, release, repeat.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Orleans Police Department jointly investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney David Haller prosecuted the case, highlighting the resources dedicated to keeping illegal firearms off the streets. Whether those resources are enough to stem the tide of violence remains to be seen.
Walsh’s case is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. While federal and local agencies celebrate convictions like these, the flow of illegal weapons continues, and the streets of New Orleans remain stained with violence. The question isn’t just about putting criminals behind bars, but about addressing the root causes that drive them to pick up a gun in the first place.
