Corrections Officer Arrested for Smuggling Contraband into DC Jail
A shocking case of corruption within the DC jail system has come to light with the arrest of Johnson Ayuk, a 31-year-old corrections officer at the Central Detention Facility (CDF). Ayuk is accused of accepting bribes to bring prohibited items, including knives, drugs, and cellular telephones, into the facility for distribution among inmates.
Ayuk, a resident of Bowie, Maryland, was arrested at the CDF on unspecified charges alleging bribery and providing or possessing contraband in prison. He was released on high-intensity supervision pending a preliminary hearing set for March 10, 2022.
The investigation, led by the FBI’s Washington Field Office and the DC Department of Corrections’ Investigative Services Branch, uncovered evidence of Ayuk’s involvement in a smuggling operation. Court documents reveal that Ayuk accepted money from the un-incarcerated girlfriend of an inmate to bring illicit materials into the jail.
Ayuk has been a corrections officer since April 2021 and was responsible for maintaining order and security at the CDF. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is prosecuting the case, with the Fraud, Public Corruption, and Civil Rights Section leading the charge.
The U.S. Marshals Service provided valuable assistance in the investigation. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability within the corrections system and the need for vigilant oversight to prevent corruption.
Ayuk is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The outcome of the case will depend on the evidence presented during the trial.
