Joliet Man Sentenced for Possessing Firearm as Felon

A Joliet man, Troy J. Kelly, 32, of the 900 block of Leawood Drive, was sentenced to serve 77 months (6 years, 5 months) in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Colin Bruce on Troy J. Kelly. Judge Bruce also ordered that Kelly remain on supervised release for a period of three years following completion of his prison sentence.

Troy J. Kelly had been in custody since his arrest in March 2014 by the U.S. Marshals Service. He had entered a guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol on Oct. 3, 2013 in Kankakee County.

The charge is the result of ongoing investigations related to gun violence in the Kankakee area by the Kankakee Area Project Safe Neighborhoods Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Kankakee Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugene L. Miller prosecuted the case. Troy J. Kelly‘s arrest and subsequent sentencing are a notable development in efforts to combat gun violence in the region.

A grand jury had indicted Troy J. Kelly in February 2014, and he has remained in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service since his arrest. The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the need for Troy J. Kelly to face the consequences of his actions.
