Jon Vincent, a/k/a “Nathan Laskoski,” 44, of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, has been charged with one count of Social Security fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. The charges were announced by Acting United States Attorney Louis D. Lappen.
According to the information, Vincent’s troubles with the law began after he was convicted in the state of Texas. He served a prison term, then escaped from a Texas halfway house in 1996. It is alleged that shortly after his escape, Vincent stole the name of the deceased Nathan Laskoski to craft a new identity.
The information charges that Vincent obtained a birth certificate for Laskoski, which he used to apply for a Social Security number in Laskoski’s name. He has been living using the deceased victim’s stolen identity since mid-1996. The alleged use of the stolen identity was discovered when a relative of the deceased victim discovered information on the ancestral website “Ancestry.com” indicating that someone was impersonating the decedent.
If convicted, Vincent faces a substantial period of incarceration, a three-year period of supervised release, a fine of up to $500,000 and a special assessment. The case against him is built on a thorough investigation by the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, the United States Postal Inspection Service and the United States Department of Labor Office of Inspector General, with assistance from the Lansdale Police Department.
The investigation into Vincent’s activities has been ongoing, and it is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Amanda R. Reinitz. The prosecution is a significant step forward in bringing Vincent to justice for his alleged crimes.
An Information is an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. As the case against Vincent moves forward, it will be important to remember that he is entitled to this presumption of innocence. However, the charges against him are serious, and if convicted, he will face significant consequences.
The Social Security fraud and identity theft charges against Vincent are a reminder of the importance of protecting personal information and the need for vigilance in preventing these types of crimes. The use of someone else’s identity for personal gain is a serious offense, and it can have significant consequences for both the victim and the perpetrator.
