Defendant Found Guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter While Armed in 2012 Stabbing
In a shocking turn of events, 32-year-old Jonathan Dawkins has been found guilty of voluntary manslaughter while armed in the May 2012 stabbing of Dwayne Brisbon in Northwest Washington.
The verdict was returned in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, following a three-day trial. The Honorable Russell F. Canan has scheduled sentencing for August 8, 2014.
According to the government’s evidence, on May 1, 2012, at approximately 2:15 a.m., Brisbon, a CT scan technician at Washington Hospital Center, was stabbed to death in the 400 block of Florida Avenue NW.
Dawkins, who was walking with a person he knew from a local bar, became upset and aggressively approached Brisbon’s car. The two began arguing, with Brisbon eventually getting out of his car and walking to the rear. Dawkins met him there, and the two continued to fight.
During the fight, Dawkins stabbed Brisbon in the upper left bicep and the neck, piercing his carotid artery and jugular vein. Dawkins then fled the scene while Brisbon attempted to drive himself to the hospital.
Surveillance video from a nearby tavern captured the defendant and the person with him just minutes before the murder. U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. commended the work of the Metropolitan Police Department, who investigated the case.
Machen also thanked the U.S. Attorney’s Office staff, including paralegal specialists, victim/witness services coordinators, litigation support specialists, and victim witness specialists, for their hard work and dedication to the case.
Dawkins faces a statutory maximum of 30 years in prison for the voluntary manslaughter while armed charge.
