A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison for receiving child pornography in a federal court in Omaha, Nebraska.
According to authorities, Jose Manuel Garcia Vargas, a Mexican national, admitted to soliciting images from young girls during Skype chats. He requested that the images be sexually explicit, and a forensic review of his computers confirmed the Skype chats.
No child pornography was recovered from Garcia Vargas’s computer, but one image had been intercepted by his internet service provider.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project was launched in May 2006 by the government and marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet.
The investigation into Garcia Vargas’s activities was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Garcia Vargas will be deported to Mexico after serving his prison sentence. He will also be subject to a 10-year term of supervised release and required to register as a sex offender if he returns to the United States.
With the conviction of Garcia Vargas, the government has demonstrated its commitment to protecting children from online exploitation and abuse.
The sentence handed down to Garcia Vargas serves as a warning to others who engage in similar activities, highlighting the severity of the consequences for those who exploit children.
