Pittsburgh Man Sentenced for Post Office Heist
In a shocking display of brazenness, a 52-year-old Pittsburgh resident robbed a U.S. Post Office in Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, on December 14, 2011, making off with $569 in U.S. Currency.
The perpetrator, identified as Joseph R. Filbert, flashed what appeared to be a gun at the postal clerk and demanded the money. Surveillance cameras from the post office and a nearby business captured photos and video of the incident, allowing investigators to piece together the evidence.
After executing a search warrant, authorities recovered the shoes Filbert is believed to have worn during the robbery. The investigation, led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, resulted in the successful prosecution of Filbert.
A federal court jury convicted Filbert of the crime, and United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak imposed a sentence of 35 months imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, and restitution in the amount of $569.
The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, David J. Hickton, commended the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for their diligent work in solving the case.
Assistant United States Attorney Margaret E. Picking prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. Filbert’s sentence serves as a reminder that the consequences for committing a crime can be severe and long-lasting.
