Joshua Miller, Racketeering, Jackson MS, 2024

JACKSON, MS – The final nail in the coffin of the Simon City Royals prison gang came down today with the sentencing of Joshua Miller, 33, of Jackson, Mississippi. Miller received 16 years and eight months in prison for his role in a sprawling racketeering conspiracy tied to the violent gang, bringing the total number of convicted Royals and associates to thirty-seven.

Federal prosecutors detailed a reign of terror orchestrated from within Mississippi’s correctional facilities, extending outwards into communities across Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, and beyond. The Simon City Royals weren’t just about controlling prison yards; they were a sophisticated criminal enterprise involved in murder, torture, large-scale drug trafficking, money laundering, and intimidation. The gang’s alliance with the Gangster Disciples amplified their reach and brutality.

The case hinged on evidence linking the Royals to a particularly gruesome 2018 prison murder. A “kill on sight” order was issued by a Royals leader, directing members to murder a targeted inmate. Dillon Heffker and Robert Williams allegedly carried out the order, brutally stabbing the victim dozens of times with makeshift weapons. The gang reportedly rewarded Heffker and Williams for the hit. The investigation uncovered a network of individuals facilitating the gang’s criminal activities both inside and outside of prison walls.

“The Simon City Royals gang engaged in murder and torture and smuggled drugs and other contraband into prisons,” stated Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “Today’s sentencing of 37 gang members ends the gang’s reign of terror in the communities and prisons of Mississippi.” U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner for the Northern District of Mississippi echoed the sentiment, stating, “This years-long investigation and prosecution demonstrates that such criminality will not go unchecked.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) played pivotal roles in dismantling the gang. ATF Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson emphasized the agency’s commitment to disrupting violent gangs, while DEA Special Agent in Charge Steven L. Hofer declared the sentencing a shattering blow to the Royals’ perceived invincibility. Both agencies vowed continued aggression in combating criminal organizations.

The prosecution underscores the federal government’s resolve to combat organized crime and hold violent offenders accountable. While the sentencing of Joshua Miller marks the end of this particular case, law enforcement officials warn that the fight against prison gangs and their external networks remains a constant battle. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by these groups and the importance of collaborative efforts to dismantle them.
