Jovan Martinez, Methamphetamine Trafficking, New Mexico 2015

ALBUQUERQUE – A local resident has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for violating federal narcotics and firearms laws.

Jovan Martinez, 29, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was sentenced to 144 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his methamphetamine trafficking and firearms conviction on May 15, 2015, according to U.S. Attorney Damon P. Martinez.

Martinez’s sentence is a result of a federal anti-violence initiative that targets ‘the worst of the worst’ offenders for federal prosecution. This initiative aims to remove repeat offenders from communities in New Mexico for as long as possible.

As part of this initiative, Martinez was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition on June 16, 2014. He was arrested by the Albuquerque Police Department for stealing a bait vehicle and found in possession of a revolver and ammunition.

Martinez had four prior convictions for residential burglary, which made him ineligible to possess firearms or ammunition. He was indicted on July 10, 2014, and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition on June 16, 2014, in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.

On May 15, 2015, Martinez pled guilty to a two-count felony information charging him with distribution of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. He admitted to purchasing the firearm and ammunition for $80.00 and some methamphetamine.

This case was investigated by the Albuquerque office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Albuquerque Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Presiliano A. Torrez prosecuted the case.
