Juan Daniel Martinez, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Florida 2020

Tampa, Florida – A local man has been sentenced to 15 years and 1 month in federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation.

According to court documents, Juan Daniel Martinez, 38, of Arcadia, was arrested in July 2019 after a traffic stop revealed a loaded gun and approximately six ounces of 98% pure methamphetamine.

Martinez, a previously convicted felon for armed kidnapping, pleaded guilty to the charges on June 30, 2020. He admitted to selling approximately a pound of methamphetamine daily or every other day and carrying a pistol to protect himself, his drugs, and his money.

During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that Martinez was on his way to Nokomis to sell drugs when he was arrested. He had been working to expand his drug trafficking territory and had been doing so for some time.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

This case was prosecuted as part of the ‘Project Safe Neighborhoods’ Program, a nationwide crime reduction strategy aimed at decreasing violent crime in communities.

The program involves a comprehensive approach to public safety, including investigating and prosecuting crimes, along with prevention and reentry efforts. In the Middle District of Florida, U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez coordinates PSN efforts in cooperation with various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.

Martinez’s prison sentence is a result of his guilty plea to possessing approximately six ounces of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it and for possessing a loaded pistol and additional ammunition.
