Cedar Rapids, IA – Juan Gerardo Rodriguez, a 22-year-old Mexican citizen illegally residing in the United States, has been sentenced to almost three months in federal prison for illegal reentry into the country following his prior deportation. Rodriguez’s transgression came to light when he was apprehended by immigration agents in January 2019 amidst charges of domestic abuse assault with injury in Linn County, Iowa.
Rodriguez, who pleaded guilty on March 1, 2019, had been deported from the United States in December 2015 and had reentered the country without government permission. The court file number for this case is 19-CR-13, and the sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams.
After serving his 85-day prison term, Rodriguez will be under supervised release for an additional year, with no parole available in the federal system. Currently held in the U.S. Marshal’s custody, he awaits transfer to immigration officials.
The case against Rodriguez was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt and investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations.
