Oklahoma City, OK – A Mexican national, JULIA ELIZABETH RODRIGUEZ ORTEGA, 31, has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for fentanyl trafficking.
In a statement, United States Attorney Robert J. Troester said that Rodriguez Ortega was arrested on February 9, 2022, after she was stopped by Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics agents while driving through Oklahoma with over 40 pounds of powder fentanyl in her car.
The seized fentanyl equated to 9 million fatal doses and had an approximate street value of $10,000,000, according to court records. Rodriguez Ortega had been documented driving cars loaded with drugs into the United States from Mexico on several occasions since 2020, but was able to evade capture through ‘driver swaps’.
Rodriguez Ortega pleaded guilty to Count 1 of the Indictment on July 1, 2022. At a sentencing hearing on June 20, 2023, U.S. District Court Judge Scott Palk sentenced Rodriguez Ortega to serve 135 months in federal prison and ordered that upon release from prison, she must serve five years of supervised release.
The investigation into Rodriguez Ortega’s fentanyl trafficking operation was conducted by the HSI Oklahoma City Field Office and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Travis Leverett.
