Justice Long, Burglary and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, South Dakota 2022

Pierre, South Dakota – In a shocking turn of events, a Lower Brule man has been charged with First Degree Burglary and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. According to the indictment, Justice Long, 29, broke into a home in Lower Brule in July 2022 and assaulted a person inside with a metal bar.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is 25 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, five years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

Long appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Moreno on November 18, 2022, and pleaded not guilty to the Indictment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case, which is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Agency.

Long was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has been set for January 17, 2023.

The investigation is ongoing, and Long is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Long’s current status is a defendant in a federal case, facing charges of First Degree Burglary and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.
