A 29-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a gun found in his home in Waterloo, Iowa.
Kalon Deon Bruce received the prison term after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon on December 6, 2021. This is not his first run-in with the law, as he had previously been convicted of multiple felony offenses, including interference with official acts while in possession of a firearm, theft, trafficking in stolen weapons, and eluding.
In June 2021, the Waterloo Police Department recovered a gun from the home where Bruce was living. He was subsequently charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.
Bruce was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams to 24 months’ imprisonment. He must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Emily K. Nydle and was investigated by a Federal Task Force composed of the Waterloo Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms assisted by the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office and the Cedar Falls Police Department.
Bruce is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody. The case file number is 21-cr-2063.
