Kalum McPhedran, Unlawful Firearm Possession, Idaho 2013

A Coeur d’Alene man has pleaded guilty to unlawfully possessing a firearm, the Grimy Times has learned.

Kalum McPhedran, 29, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, pleaded guilty yesterday in United States District Court to unlawful possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced.

The crime was committed on January 15, 2013, when McPhedran knowingly possessed a Remington 12 gauge shotgun, despite being prohibited from doing so due to a previous conviction for possession of a controlled substance in 2010.

Under the plea agreement, McPhedran will forfeit the firearm he unlawfully possessed.

The charge of unlawful firearm possession is punishable by up to ten years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release.

McPhedran’s sentencing is set for November 13, 2013, before U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge at the federal courthouse in Coeur d’Alene.

The case was investigated by the North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force (NIVCTF), a team comprised of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Idaho State Police, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Post Falls Police Department, and Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police.

The NIVCTF was instrumental in this case, which targeted a myriad of violent crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, felonious assault, and drug trafficking.

The case was prosecuted as part of Idaho’s Project Safe Neighborhoods Program, which aims to reduce gun violence in Idaho.
