Caldwell Man Sentenced for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
A 30-year-old man from Caldwell, Idaho, has been sentenced to prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm. Nathan John Vert, 30, of Caldwell, Idaho, was sentenced to 57 months in prison for the crime.
According to court records, Vert was found to be in possession of a 12-gauge shotgun after a traffic accident in Nampa. The firearm was confiscated by Nampa Police Department officers. Vert is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a 2003 conviction for delivery of a controlled substance, a felony, in Canyon County.
The case was investigated by the Nampa Police Department and Treasure Valley Metro Violent Crimes Task Force, which is made up of federal, state, and local agencies. The Metro Task Force includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Boise Police Department, Ada County Sheriff’s Office, Caldwell Police Department, Nampa Police Department, Meridian Police Department, Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, and Idaho Department of Probation and Parole.
The case was prosecuted by the Special Assistant U.S. Attorney hired by the Treasure Valley Partnership and the State of Idaho to address gang crimes. The Treasure Valley Partnership is a group of elected officials in southwest Idaho dedicated to regional coordination, cooperation, and collaboration on creating coherent regional growth.
Vert pleaded guilty to the charge on May 19, 2014. He was sentenced to 57 months in prison and ordered to serve three years of supervised release. He was also required to forfeit the firearm he illegally possessed.
The case highlights the importance of addressing gang crimes in the Treasure Valley. The Treasure Valley Partnership’s efforts to combat gang activity are crucial in keeping the community safe.
