A former Georgia Power Valdosta Federal Credit Union employee has been sentenced to 41 months in prison for bank fraud and filing false tax returns.
Kelly Yawn, 32, of Hahira, Georgia, was sentenced on March 25, 2015, by the Honorable Hugh Lawson, Senior United States District Judge, in Valdosta.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Yawn misdirected more than 900 share drafts and over 1,200 Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions, totaling over $499,000, from Georgia Power Valdosta Federal Credit Union funds.
Yawn used her position as an employee to manipulate the financial system and conceal the theft, and then failed to report the income on her tax return.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation investigated the case, with assistance from the Special Enforcement Program of the Internal Revenue Service.
Assistant United States Attorney Robert D. McCullers prosecuted the case for the government.
Yawn was also ordered to pay restitution totaling $628,539.34 to the fraud victims and $139,865 to the IRS as unpaid taxes on unreported income for tax years 2008 through 2011.
