Thalha Jubair, Computer Fraud, New Jersey 2023

Newark, N.J. – The District of New Jersey has unsealed a complaint charging Thalha Jubair, a United Kingdom national, with conspiracies to commit computer fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering, linked to at least 120 cyber attacks on U.S. entities. The alleged scheme resulted in over $115 million in ransom payments.

Jubair, also known as ‘EarthtoStar,’ ‘Brad,’ ‘Austin,’ and ‘@autistic,’ is accused of being a key player in the Scattered Spider group, responsible for disrupting critical infrastructure and federal court systems. FBI Assistant Director Brett Leatherman emphasized that no cybercriminal is beyond reach, as law enforcement continues to dismantle criminal networks.

Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba highlighted the sophistication of Jubair’s efforts to remain anonymous, but the relentless pursuit by the FBI and its international partners has led to his arrest. The Justice Department’s Criminal Division Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti reinforced the commitment to stay ahead of technologically advanced cybercriminals.

Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy for the FBI noted the extraordinary coordination with foreign and industry partners, emphasizing that cyber-criminal syndicates will be pursued and held accountable. The charges reflect a decisive victory against those who thought they could cripple American industries without consequence.

Jubair is alleged to have conspired with others to use social engineering techniques to gain unauthorized access into computer networks, steal information, and demand ransom payments in exchange for regaining control of the data. He also conspired with others to launder the funds obtained through this scheme.
