Wire Fraud Scheme Exposed in West Virginia
A 63-year-old man from Ohio has been indicted on wire fraud charges following an investigation by the FBI.
Kenneth Werkau, of Clarington, Ohio, was employed as an associate at Walmart in Moundsville, West Virginia, when he allegedly stole $123,775 in gift cards and activated them without paying for them.
The scheme occurred between September 2019 and January 2020, during which time Werkau is accused of committing three counts of wire fraud.
Werkau faces up to 20 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for each charge. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dane DeMasi-Lemon is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
An indictment is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
In this case, Werkau is accused of using his position at Walmart to steal the gift cards, which were then activated without payment. The total amount stolen is approximately $123,775.
Werkau’s indictment serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in preventing and detecting financial crimes.
