Omaha, NE – In a move to curb gun violence, 28-year-old Kevin Gray of Omaha, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 77 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentencing took place on March 10, 2023, in federal court in Omaha.
Gray, who has prior felony convictions for robbery, is prohibited from possessing firearms under federal law. Despite this, he sold a Ruger 5.7-caliber handgun to a cooperating witness working with law enforcement on November 10, 2020.
As a result of his actions, Gray now faces a harsh sentence. After serving his time in prison, he will begin a three-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
This case is part of Project Guardian, a signature initiative launched by the Attorney General in the fall of 2019 to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. The program aims to enhance coordination among federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes.
Gray’s case was prosecuted with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Omaha Police Department, both key partners in the Project Guardian initiative.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Gray’s actions demonstrate the importance of enforcing federal firearms laws. The Project Guardian initiative aims to ensure that federal resources are directed at the criminals posing the greatest threat to our communities.
Kevin Gray’s case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. As the Department of Justice continues to pursue cases like this, the public can expect to see a reduction in gun violence and a safer community.
