New Orleans native Kevin Sturgis, 26, has been handed a 37-month prison sentence for his role in a federal firearms violation. The sentence was imposed on August 27, 2025 by U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance, who also ordered three years of supervised release following his release from prison. A $100 special assessment fee accompanies the punishment.
Sturgis’s crime came to light on November 23, 2023, when New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officers spotted him outside a Hollygrove residence, donning a ski mask and gloves. They observed him holding an AR-15 pistol and a handgun. During his arrest, officers found a Glock Model 21, .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol loaded with 12 rounds hidden in his waistband. Another firearm, an Anderson Manufacturing Model AM-15, was recovered on the porch, equipped with 19 rounds of ammunition.
Sturgis had a history of felony convictions in Orleans Parish prior to this incident. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative effort aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in May 2021, the initiative focuses on fostering trust in communities, supporting local organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and NOPD jointly investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit leading the prosecution.
This sentence sends a clear message about the city’s commitment to combating gun violence. Sturgis’s fate serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who violate federal firearm laws.
