Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park has been the scene of some high-profile legal battles recently, with two separate cases involving serious charges and substantial sentences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Wyoming has been active, dealing with a mix of alcohol-related offenses and drug trafficking.
In one of the park’s more recent incidents, John Nofsinger, 31, from Columbus, Ohio, was handed a 7-day sentence for operating a vehicle under the influence (OUI) with a blood alcohol concentration above .08% in Yellowstone National Park. He refused to take a breath test and was also sentenced to three years’ probation, barred from entering the park during this period. The fine he must pay totals $800.
Michael O’Connell, 54, of Canton, Massachusetts, also faced OUI charges within the park’s jurisdiction. He too refused a breath test and received a similar 7-day sentence for this refusal, to be served immediately following his sentencing hearing. O’Connell was also sentenced to two years’ probation and an $800 fine.
Another case involved Kyle Decare, 30, from Brighton, Michigan, who pleaded guilty to driving under the influence with a suspended license in Yellowstone National Park. Decare’s second DUI conviction within one year came with a heavier price tag: a 7-day sentence for OUI and 2 years’ probation, plus a $1,650 fine.
Meanwhile, Calvin Eugene Stroup, 42, from Greeley, Colorado, was sentenced to 97 months’ imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. His sentence was the result of an investigation by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) that uncovered his role as a middleman in a drug trafficking ring.
Collie Judson Warren, 49, from Arapahoe, Wyoming, faced an 84-month sentence for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. His conviction was the result of an FBI and DCI investigation into drug trafficking on the Wind River Indian Reservation.
