Kewa Pueblo Man Sentenced for Child Abuse
A Kewa Pueblo man has been sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for aggravated child sexual abuse.
Preston Coriz, 33, was sentenced to 210 months in federal prison for his conviction. He will also be required to register as a sex offender and undergo 10 years of supervised release after completing his sentence.
Coriz was arrested in November 2012 on an indictment charging him with sexually abusing a child under the age of 12 in 2008. He pleaded guilty on July 11, 2013, to the indictment and admitted to assaulting the child by touching their genitals with his hand and finger.
The case was investigated by the FBI’s Albuquerque and Santa Fe offices, as well as the Southern Pueblos Agency of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle T. Nayback.
Coriz’s conviction was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, and to identify and rescue victims.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting children from abuse and exploitation. It also highlights the efforts of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to hold perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
