James William Smith, Kidnapping and Commercial Sex Trafficking, California 2022

A Chattanooga man has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for his role in a kidnapping and commercial sex trafficking operation.

Corrie Gillispie, 42, was sentenced to 396 months in federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge Travis R. McDonough on September 7, 2018. Gillispie, also known as "Bigg Tyme", was convicted of kidnapping, two counts of commercial sex trafficking, transportation for prostitution, and money laundering after a seven-day jury trial in April 2018.

According to court documents and evidence presented during the trial, Gillispie romantically pursued a victim and convinced her to travel to another state to meet him. However, when the victim arrived, Gillispie informed her that he was a pimp and restrained and assaulted her when she attempted to leave his vehicle.

The victim was held against her will by Gillispie and forced to engage in commercial sex, from which he benefited financially through threats of force, fraud, and coercion.

During the trial and sentencing hearing, Judge McDonough found that Gillispie acted disrespectfully with an intention to obstruct the administration of justice and sentenced him to an additional 12 months in prison for contempt.

The investigation into Gillispie’s activities was a collaborative effort between U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, the Chattanooga Police Department, the FBI, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Woods represented the United States in court proceedings.

Gillispie’s sentence is a stark reminder of the severity of human trafficking crimes and the need for continued efforts to bring perpetrators to justice. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.

This case highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in combating human trafficking and the need for stronger laws and enforcement to protect victims of these crimes.
