A former high school teacher and rowing coach has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing a student and possessing sexually explicit material of a minor.
Kirkland Shipley, 48, of Washington, D.C., pleaded guilty on June 3, 2022, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, to first-degree sexual abuse of a secondary education student and possession of a sexual performance by a minor.
The crimes occurred while Shipley was a teacher and head coach of the girls’ crew team at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland. He was sentenced by the Honorable Maribeth Raffinan.
Shipley’s victims were both students on the girls’ crew team at Walt Whitman High School. One victim was abused between 2014 and 2018, while the other was abused in 2013, after graduating from high school.
Shipley was arrested on August 24, 2021. Following his prison term, he will be placed on two years of probation and will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department Robert J. Contee III. They commended the work of the Metropolitan Police Department, which investigated the case, and the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
