Kirtan Patel, 24, Faces Up to Life in Prison for Attempting to Entice a Minor
Ocala, Florida – In a disturbing case of online predation, Kirtan Patel, a 24-year-old Indian national, has pleaded guilty to attempting to entice a 13-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity. This egregious crime has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting our children.
According to the plea agreement, between May 22 and 24, 2024, Patel communicated online with someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl. However, the child was actually an undercover Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent. Patel engaged in a sexually explicit conversation with the undercover agent, further demonstrating the severity of his intentions.
Patel’s actions eventually led to his arrest when he traveled to a location in Marion County to engage in sexual activity with the child. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks our children face online and the importance of robust law enforcement efforts to protect them.
Kirtan Patel faces a minimum penalty of 10 years, up to life, in federal prison for his crimes. A sentencing date has not yet been set. This case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Janette Swartzberg leading the prosecution.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
