COLTON, NEW YORK – A St. Lawrence County man is facing serious federal time after authorities allegedly found him hauling 25 kilograms of cocaine in a rental vehicle. Casey Kocher, 28, of Colton, New York, was indicted yesterday on a charge of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, a bust that promises to send ripples through the local drug pipeline.
The collar went down during a traffic stop conducted by the New York State Police in Colton. According to court documents, Kocher was found to be in possession of the massive quantity of cocaine stashed inside a black duffle bag. Federal prosecutors allege the cocaine was destined for further distribution, suggesting Kocher wasn’t just a user, but a key link in a larger trafficking operation. It’s a substantial amount of poison hitting the streets, and law enforcement moved swiftly to cut it off.
“Drug distribution of this magnitude brings devastation to local communities by fueling addiction, driving violent crime, and endangering families and neighborhoods,” thundered Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III in a prepared statement. “Kocher showed no concern for his community as he allegedly brought bulk quantity cocaine to be disbursed among many, and now my office will bring the full force of the federal government to prosecute him.”
DEA Special Agent in Charge Frank A. Tarentino III echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the collaborative effort that led to Kocher’s arrest. “The arrest of Casey Kocher and seizure of approximately 25 kilos of cocaine is a result of the collaborative efforts DEA New York and our law enforcement partners have when targeting those individuals responsible for poisoning our communities,” Tarentino stated. “I applaud the diligent work of our special agents and those officers who removed this trafficker and their illicit narcotics from the tri-state pipeline.” New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James also lauded the teamwork, highlighting the commitment to protecting communities from narcotics trafficking.
Kocher made an initial appearance in federal court this morning before United States Magistrate Judge Gary L. Favor and was immediately remanded to custody – meaning no bail. If convicted, Kocher is facing a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, with a potential life sentence hanging over his head. The actual sentence will be determined by the judge, taking into account sentencing guidelines and other relevant factors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Stitt is leading the prosecution.
The investigation remains ongoing, with the DEA and New York State Police continuing to probe the origins of the cocaine and any potential co-conspirators. This bust is a stark reminder that the drug trade continues to thrive in upstate New York, and federal authorities are determined to dismantle these operations, one trafficker at a time.
