Kofi Kyei Asare Takyi, Passport Fraud, Virginia 2024

Kofi Kyei Asare Takyi, 44, a citizen of Ghana, was arrested Monday at Dulles International Airport after attempting to enter the United States using a fraudulent passport under the name Michael Christopher Wilson. Federal authorities say the deception was uncovered within minutes of his arrival on a flight from Brussels, Belgium, exposing a web of stolen identities and forged documents.

Customs and Border Protection officers flagged Takyi during routine screening after he presented the false passport. A subsequent search of his luggage revealed a cache of counterfeit identification: a Georgia driver’s license, a Maryland driver’s license, a Social Security card, and multiple credit cards — all in the name of Michael Christopher Wilson. Agents also found a Ghanaian passport and additional Maryland-issued ID bearing Takyi’s real name.

Fingerprint analysis confirmed the deception. The prints matched an FBI number tied to multiple prior arrests and at least three separate identities. When confronted and read his Miranda rights, Takyi admitted he was not Michael Christopher Wilson and confessed he was a citizen of Ghana, not the United States — a statement that sealed the case against him.

Takyi has been charged with false statements in application and use of a passport, a federal crime that carries significant prison time. The criminal complaint, filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, alleges premeditated fraud and deliberate evasion of U.S. immigration controls. Authorities say the use of a stolen American identity to cross international borders poses a direct threat to national security.

“Violating U.S. immigration law is a very serious offense, and one that has the potential to threaten our nation’s security,” said Wayne Biondi, CBP Port Director at Washington Dulles. “We hope this prosecution deters would-be impostors and reminds them that Customs and Border Protection officers are skilled at detecting fraudsters and remain ever vigilant at our nation’s 328 ports of entry.”

Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, announced the charges alongside Biondi. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Marina C. Fernandez is prosecuting the case. Court records, including the criminal complaint, are available through the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and PACER under Case No. 1:17-mj-26. Takyi remains in federal custody, presumed innocent until proven guilty.
