Fazliddin Kurbanov, Warden Attempted Murder, California 2023

LOS ANGELES – A grim twist in the tale of Fazliddin Kurbanov, a man already serving a 25-year sentence for aiding a foreign terrorist organization. Today, Kurbanov, 34, faced fresh charges after pleading guilty to attempting murder of a federal prison warden.

The attack occurred at the Federal Correctional Institute at Victorville on May 31, 2016. Kurbanov, wielding a prison-made knife, aimed for the throat of the warden. The officer suffered serious injuries but has since recovered.

In exchange for his guilty plea to one count of attempted murder of a federal officer before Judge Virginia A. Phillips, Kurbanov now faces a minimum 15-year sentence, to be served consecutively to his existing term. The judge will sentence him on June 4.

When originally sentenced in 2016, Kurbanov was convicted of conspiring and attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, as well as possessing an unregistered destructive device. His latest action does not bode well for his prospects.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation into this recent attack, while the National Security Division of the United States Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case.
