Lamaas Lowery-Bey, 28, Gets 70 Months for Gun Possession in DC

Lamaas Lowery-Bey, a 28-year-old man from Washington DC, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for possessing a .40 caliber Glock semi-automatic handgun while on supervised release for assault. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Dabney L. Friedrich on April 18, 2025.

According to court documents, Lowery-Bey was observed pulling a black semi-automatic handgun out of the front of his pants on September 14, 2023 in the 1900 block of 18th Street SE. Later, on October 4, 2023, Metropolitan Police Department officers executed a search warrant at his residence and recovered a .40 caliber Glock semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine. The firearm was found behind a canvas painting above a bathroom toilet and was loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition.

The gun was also equipped with a ‘switch,’ which would have enabled it to fire like a machine gun if it was operable. However, a check revealed that the gun had been reported stolen. Lowery-Bey, who has been held since his arrest in November 2024, was previously convicted for attempted assault with a dangerous weapon (gun), possession of a firearm (prior conviction), and felony contempt stemming from an incident of domestic violence on August 6, 2019.

Prior to the arrest in this case, Lowery-Bey was detained in June 2023 for unlawful possession of a 9mm Taurus Millenium handgun loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition and a 50-round drum magazine. He was charged in D.C. Superior Court, but the counts were dismissed.

Lowery-Bey’s case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI Washington Field Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Iris McCranie. The sentencing marks a significant blow to Lowery-Bey’s attempts to evade the law, and it serves as a reminder of the consequences of gun possession by felons.

The incident occurred amidst a series of five homicides in the Fairlawn neighborhood in 2023, prompting law enforcement to focus on the area. The sentencing of Lowery-Bey is a victory for law enforcement and a warning to those who would seek to engage in similar activities. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between local and federal law enforcement agencies in combating crime and keeping communities safe.
