LAREDO, Texas – Alfredo Gutierrez-Cantu, 28, is facing federal charges after authorities uncovered a trove of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) linked to his Laredo residence. The Mexican national, already in custody, allegedly possessed, received, and distributed horrific content, according to a statement released by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
The case originated with the discovery of a Google account tied to a Laredo address containing CSAM. Investigators allege Gutierrez-Cantu owned the account and resided at the location. The indictment details his alleged involvement in online group chats where links led to a site hosting approximately 500 CSAM files. This isn’t a case of accidental exposure; it’s a deliberate descent into depravity.
A search warrant executed at his residence yielded multiple electronic devices reportedly containing CSAM images and videos. Disturbingly, one video depicted three minors engaged in sexual acts. Gutierrez-Cantu, in a chilling admission, allegedly claimed he “forgot to delete” the file due to being “too busy,” a pathetic attempt to downplay the gravity of his actions. This isn’t negligence; it’s callous disregard for the unimaginable harm inflicted on these children.
“The allegations, if true, demonstrate that the defendant is somebody who shouldn’t be in our country, and definitely shouldn’t be out walking the streets of our community,” Ganjei stated bluntly. “The Southern District of Texas won’t pull any punches when it comes to border security or the investigation and apprehension of those who consume child sexual abuse materials.” The statement underscores a zero-tolerance approach to this particularly heinous crime.
Gutierrez-Cantu, originally charged by criminal complaint on August 21, is expected to appear before a U.S. magistrate judge in Laredo soon. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations, Laredo Child Exploitation Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew P. Hakala-Finch is prosecuting the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide DOJ initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. PSC brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify, rescue, and prosecute offenders. An indictment is a formal accusation, and Gutierrez-Cantu is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, the evidence presented suggests a dark and disturbing pattern of behavior that demands justice. Further information on PSC can be found at DOJ’s PSC page and resources for internet safety at the resources tab on that page.
