MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – In a stunning turn of events, 44-year-old Michael Jason Sanders from the town of Pryor has entered a guilty plea in federal court. Sanders stands accused of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition—a charge that could leave him behind bars for up to 15 years.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma revealed that Sanders was caught with two semi-automatic pistols and 96 rounds of ammunition, all on May 5, 2025. His previous conviction, which carried a sentence exceeding one year, made this possession illegal under federal law.
This case stems from an intensive investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office. The ATF has been relentless in its efforts to crack down on gun-related crimes in the region, leading to a successful prosecution in this instance.
U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Edward Snow oversaw the guilty plea and ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report, which will play a crucial role in determining Sanders’ final sentence. The case is set to be reviewed by a U.S. District Court Judge who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.
Sanders remains in custody, held by the United States Marshals Service until his sentencing date. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lewis M. Reagan represented the United States in this case, ensuring that justice was served.
