Local Artist Pleads Guilty to Importing Obscene Materials
Buffalo, N.Y. – In a shocking turn of events, 62-year-old Lawrence F. Brose, a local artist, has pleaded guilty to importing obscene materials. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo, the investigation against Brose began after a German police agency contacted United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, alerting them to an IP address in the United States that had downloaded suspected child pornography. ICE Special Agents determined that the IP address was registered to Brose, and subsequent meetings with the defendant revealed that he had indeed viewed the images.
During a search of Brose’s computer, agents discovered a plethora of disturbing images, including one of a minor male less than 16 years of age engaging in sexually explicit conduct. The investigation was led by Special Agents of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of James C. Spero.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. This program marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
The plea is a culmination of a thorough investigation, and sentencing is scheduled for August 13, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. before Judge William M. Skretny. As the community grapples with the severity of the charges, one thing is clear: the justice system will take swift action against those who prey on the vulnerable.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of child exploitation and the importance of vigilance in protecting our children. As we move forward, it is crucial that we continue to support initiatives like Project Safe Childhood and hold perpetrators accountable for their heinous crimes.
The people of Buffalo will be watching closely as this case unfolds, and we will continue to provide updates on any further developments.
