Lawyer Sentenced for Campaign Finance Scandal
A high-profile lawyer has been handed a 30-month prison sentence after being convicted of conspiring to defraud the US in a campaign finance scandal.
Russell S. Adler, 52, of Ft. Lauderdale, was sentenced by United States District Judge James I. Cohn for his role in a scheme to circumvent campaign finance laws.
According to court documents, Adler was a shareholder of the former Ft. Lauderdale law firm of Rothstein, Rosenfeldt and Adler, P.A. (RRA), when he conspired with others to make political contributions to various campaigns which were unlawfully reimbursed to them by RRA.
Adler pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the Federal Election Campaign Act and to defraud the United States, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 371.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lawrence D. LaVecchio, Paul F. Schwartz and Jeffrey N. Kaplan are prosecuting the case, while the FBI and IRS-CI conducted the investigation.
Rothstein, Rosenfeldt and Adler, P.A. was a prominent law firm in Ft. Lauderdale, and Adler’s involvement in the scandal is a stark reminder of the corrupting influence of power and greed.
The case is a significant victory for law enforcement and serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit the system for personal gain.
Adler will serve 30 months in prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release.
