Lee Larney, Assault, South Dakota 2014

Pine Ridge Man Sentenced for Assault Charges

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE

A brutal assault case from the Pine Ridge Reservation has ended with a harsh sentence for the perpetrator. Lee Larney, a/k/a “Southern Wind”, has been sentenced to 12 months of imprisonment and 3 years of supervised release for Assault on a Federal Officer, and 30 months of imprisonment consecutive and 3 years of supervised release concurrent for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

Larney was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims for each offense.

The assault charges stem from two separate incidents in 2012. In August, Larney struck an Oglala Sioux Tribe police officer in the face while the officer was arresting him for intoxication. In April, Larney struck a man repeatedly in the face, causing a broken jaw which resulted in surgery.

The investigations were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. The cases were handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Collins.

Larney was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. This sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent behavior, and Grimy Times will continue to bring you updates on this story and others like it.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentence, which was handed down by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court. Larney will have to face the consequences of his actions behind bars for the next three years.
