A Lexington man, Dashawn Dawkins, made a killing off fake urine tests at a sober home company called Serenity Keeper’s, LLC. Investigators say Dawkins, a peer support specialist, raked in $62,750 in kickbacks for ordering urine tests that cost Medicaid and Medicare a staggering $2,569,946.
The scam involved Dawkins and others using a stolen nurse practitioner’s ID and forged signature to order over 9,000 urine tests. These tests were never reviewed by a treating medical provider, a clear red flag for fraud.
The evidence also showed that Serenity Keepers billed Medicaid for fake peer support services, claiming to provide 6 hours of support a day for every patient, regardless of whether that service was actually provided.
Dawkins was the fifth defendant to be convicted in the investigation. The total cost of the scam to Kentucky Medicaid and Medicare? A mind-boggling $9,077,260.
