Dekevious Riley, Marijuana and Firearm Possession, Nebraska 2023

Dekevious Riley, 22, of Lincoln, Nebraska, has been handed a 30-month sentence plus three years’ supervised release after being caught with marijuana and a firearm. The United States Attorney Steven Russell announced the sentence on February 3, 2023, following Riley’s conviction for being a marijuana user in possession of a firearm.

The incident began on March 24, 2022, when Lincoln investigators approached Riley as he sat in a car smelling of marijuana. A search turned up 2.6 grams of pot, a rolling tray, and a partially smoked blunt. Riley had an outstanding warrant for marijuana possession at the time, leading to his arrest.

Police followed up by searching an apartment where Riley had been staying, uncovering two handguns, magazines, a speed loader, and a Glock 9mm pistol. Social media images and videos revealed Riley’s ongoing use of narcotics and firearms between April 16, 2021, and March 4, 2022.

Riley confessed to regular marijuana use and claimed ownership of the Glock pistol during his interrogation. The Lincoln Police Department and the FBI investigated the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.

Project Safe Neighborhoods’ strategy focuses on fostering community trust, supporting prevention efforts, strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results. This initiative strengthens PSN by focusing on core principles: legitimate law enforcement, community-based organizations, focused enforcement, and accountability.

The sentence handed down to Riley is a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who combine drug use with illegal firearm possession.
