LOUISVILLE, KY — In a sweeping crackdown on the fentanyl crisis, two Louisville men have been sentenced to substantial prison terms for their roles in distributing over 21,000 deadly pills and firearms. Jamie Shelby, Jr., 26, and Kevon Smith, 25, were both handed down sentences that reflect their heinous disregard for public safety.
Jamie Shelby, Jr. was sentenced to 15 years behind bars, followed by five years of supervised release, on charges including conspiracy to possess fentanyl with intent to distribute, possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Kevon Smith received a sentence of 5 years and 10 months in prison, plus four years of supervised release, for the same crimes.
The investigation, spanning from April 12, 2024, to July 9, 2024, revealed that Shelby, Jr. and Smith had conspired to distribute fentanyl, leading to four controlled purchases totaling 4,200 pills. On July 12, 2024, over 17,000 fentanyl pills and four firearms were seized during a search warrant at Shelby Jr.’s residence, including handguns from Glock, Springfield, and Sig Sauer.
Shelby, Jr., with a criminal record that includes conspiracy to commit robbery and domestic battery, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by those who traffic in illegal substances. ‘These defendants earned every second of their sentences,’ said U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner. ‘The fentanyl crisis must be stopped, and these convictions are a step in that direction.’
DEA Special Agent in Charge Jim Scott echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in combating drug trafficking. ‘Counterfeit pharmaceuticals laced with deadly doses of fentanyl continue to devastate our communities,’ said Scott. ‘The DEA remains committed to protecting lives and holding those who profit from this crisis accountable.’
This case was a significant part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at eliminating cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime in the United States. Assistant U.S. Attorney Erwin Roberts prosecuted the case.
