LOUISVILLE, KY – The grimy streets of Louisville were hit with another blow against drug trafficking as Tremell Smith, 34, was sentenced to ten years in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine. This sentence comes after a relentless investigation that spanned across law enforcement agencies.
The U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner, along with Special Agents Jim Scott of the DEA and John Nokes of the ATF, joined Chief Paul Humphrey of the Louisville Metro Police Department in announcing Smith’s fate on August 27, 2025.
Court documents revealed a chilling sequence: on March 11, 2024, Smith sold 460 grams to an informant, followed by another sale of 231 grams on March 19. Both transactions were meticulously recorded, leading to the confirmation of 691 grams of methamphetamine being distributed.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Erwin Roberts was at the helm of the prosecution, ensuring justice for the community. The ATF took the lead in this investigation with support from the DEA and the Louisville Metro Police Department.
This conviction is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative against drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations. Smith’s sentence reflects the Department of Justice’s commitment to restoring peace and security.
The federal system offers no parole for Smith, who will serve his full term before transitioning into six years of supervised release.
