Lubbock Man Faces 20 Years for Child Pornography
LUBBOCK, Texas — A Lubbock man was behind bars for his role in a federal child pornography case, announced John R. Parker, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas.
Michael Dennis Powers, 47, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of prepubescent child pornography in a U.S. Magistrate Judge’s courtroom.
Powers’ sentence could be up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. He remains on bond, awaiting his sentencing hearing, which will be scheduled at a later date.
According to court documents, Powers admitted to using his home computer to search the Internet for child pornography. During his search, he downloaded and viewed numerous files containing the illicit material. The files included images of prepubescent minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.
On April 9, authorities found three computer disks containing the child pornography at Powers’ residence.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program involves federal, state, and local resources to identify and rescue victims, as well as prosecute those responsible.
The FBI and Lubbock Police Department investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven M. Sucsy handling the prosecution.
