Philadelphia Man Convicted of Narcotics and Gun Offenses Receives 51-Year Prison Sentence

Luis Algarin-Torres, a 34-year-old Philadelphia resident, was sentenced to 622 months in prison for distribution of narcotics and firearms possession offenses.

On March 10, 2018, Drug Enforcement Administration agents executed a search at Algarin-Torres’ home on the 4000 block of North Reese Street in Philadelphia, where they found $28,000 in cash, 34 grams of cocaine, and a loaded firearm modified to fire automatically.

While awaiting trial, Algarin-Torres recruited another inmate to try to kill a witness who was scheduled to testify against him.

‘Luis Algarin-Torres received a very long prison sentence because he’s a career offender and very dangerous man,’ said U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. ‘For years, this large-scale drug trafficker helped flood Philadelphia with poison, and after he was arrested for it, tried to have a witness killed to better his chances at trial.’

Algarin-Torres pleaded guilty to possession of the 34 grams of cocaine with intent to distribute and was found guilty of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys David J. Ignall and Meghan E. Claiborne.

The sentence will be followed by six years of supervised release. Algarin-Torres’ crimes took place in Philadelphia, PA, and the sentencing occurred on March 31, 2023. He is currently serving his 51-year prison sentence.
