North Platte Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine

In a recent development in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Nebraska, Luke H. Schwartz, a 44-year-old resident of North Platte, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

According to court records, Schwartz, along with others, was involved in a conspiracy to sell methamphetamine in North Platte between July 2022 and February 2023. The group was responsible for the distribution of pounds of methamphetamine, with a minimum of 106 grams of actual methamphetamine sold to a confidential informant (CI) working with law enforcement in January 2023.

During this period, Schwartz was directly involved in two sales, with at least 70 grams of actual methamphetamine sold. The first sale took place on January 2023, where the CI set up a controlled buy with Schwartz, providing him with $600 to purchase an ounce of methamphetamine. The CI then met with Schwartz at a pre-arranged location and exchanged the money for a baggie containing a white crystalline substance, later confirmed to be at least 22 grams of actual methamphetamine by the State Crime Lab.

The second sale also occurred in January 2023, where the CI set up another buy with Schwartz, providing him with $1,200 to purchase two ounces of methamphetamine. Schwartz then met with the CI at a pre-determined location, exchanging the money for a baggie containing a white crystalline substance, later confirmed to be at least 48 grams of methamphetamine by the State Crime Lab.

The case was investigated by the Tri-City Drug Enforcement Team (TRIDENT), a task force comprising law enforcement personnel from various agencies, including the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Grand Island Police Department, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Hastings Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, Kearney Police Department, and the Nebraska State Patrol.

Schwartz was sentenced on September 5, 2024, by United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis to a total of 120 months’ imprisonment. Following his release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the severity of the consequences for those involved in drug trafficking in Nebraska. Law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these networks, bringing perpetrators to justice and keeping communities safe.
