Jersey City Lawyer Faces Charges for Structuring Cash Deposits
Newark, N.J. – A Jersey City lawyer, Magdy Fouad Anise, appeared in federal court to face charges related to structuring cash deposits to avoid reporting income to the IRS. The 51-year-old, also known as Michael Anise, is accused of structuring approximately $800,000 in cash.
Anise, who practiced at Anise & Anise, Attorneys at Law, in Jersey City, allegedly received cash kickbacks from doctors and others in exchange for referring personal-injury clients from 2009 through 2011. He reportedly asked a doctor to pay him with gold bars, contribute to his church, and pay his mortgage instead of receiving cash.
According to investigators, Anise made cash deposits into five different bank accounts in amounts less than $10,000, which would have triggered the filing of a currency transaction report (CTR) with the IRS. The charge of structuring cash transactions to avoid reporting requirements carries a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Anise is also charged with structuring more than $100,000, which carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The investigation into Anise’s activities was led by special agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Newark.
U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited the investigators for their work in bringing Anise to justice. Anise is represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Lisa Mack, Esq. The charges against Anise are merely accusations, and he is considered innocent until proven guilty.
Anise’s case highlights the importance of enforcing financial reporting requirements to prevent money laundering and other illicit activities. The prosecution’s efforts demonstrate a commitment to holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that the financial system remains transparent and secure.
