Man Caught with 69 Pot Plants

A St. Croix man is facing up to five years in prison after admitting to growing 69 marijuana plants near his property.

Raymond Mathurin, 48, pleaded guilty to manufacturing a controlled substance in District Court on St. Croix, according to United States Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe.

The plants were discovered on June 26, 2014, and Mathurin’s sentencing date has not been scheduled, with Magistrate Judge George Cannon continuing his release pending sentencing.

Mathurin is also facing a $250,000 fine and a $100 special assessment as part of his plea.

The case was investigated by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rami S. Badawy.

Mathurin’s guilty plea marks a significant blow to the island’s marijuana trade, with authorities cracking down on growers and dealers in recent years.

The investigation and prosecution of Mathurin serves as a reminder that law enforcement will continue to pursue those involved in the illicit marijuana trade, no matter where they operate.
