No. North Smithfield Resident Sentenced To 5 Years In Federal Prison For Possessing, Distributing Child Pornography
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a shocking case of child exploitation, Derek D. Felicio, 42, of North Smithfield, R.I., was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for possessing more than 90,000 images and 555 videos depicting child pornography and for distributing child pornography. Felicio, who has been in federal custody since his arrest on May 1, 2014, will also serve 10 years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
The case against Felicio began in March 2013, when he unknowingly contacted an undercover Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent in Salt Lake City, UT, on a website used to share images of child pornography. A forensic examination of two computers seized from his residence in October 2013 revealed the disturbing extent of his crimes.
At the time of his guilty plea on October 24, 2014, Felicio admitted to sending HSI agents numerous photographs depicting the lascivious display of prepubescent girls. The evidence presented in court was a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of child exploitation.
U.S. District Court Chief Judge William E. Smith handed down the sentence, which reflects the severity of Felicio’s crimes. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lee H. Vilker. The Rhode Island State Police Internet Crimes Against Children task force assisted in the investigation.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of child exploitation and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. The sentence handed down by Judge Smith sends a strong message that child pornography and distribution will not be tolerated in our society.
The case against Felicio is a testament to the dedication and hard work of law enforcement agencies, including the Homeland Security Investigations and the Rhode Island State Police. Their efforts have helped to bring a measure of justice to the victims of child exploitation.
Felicio’s sentence is a significant step towards holding him accountable for his crimes. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
