Man Sentenced For Bald Eagle Slaying

Cody M. Weyer, a 42-year-old man from Howes, South Dakota, has been sentenced for his role in the unlawful taking of a bald eagle.

On January 21, 2014, a South Dakota Game Fish and Parks officer responded to a complaint of dead deer in a particular area of Meade County. While searching for the dead deer, the officer found a dead mature bald eagle in a bull pasture leased by Weyer.

During the course of the investigation, Weyer was interviewed and admitted to killing the eagle.

On July 31, 2014, U.S. Magistrate Veronica L. Duffy sentenced Weyer to 1 year of probation, a $500 fine, $10,000 in restitution, and $25 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The conviction stems from an investigation conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.

Weyer’s actions are a disheartening reminder of the importance of protecting our nation’s wildlife. The bald eagle is a symbol of American strength and freedom, and it is imperative that we take steps to ensure their safety.

As we continue to push for greater protections for our wildlife, we must also hold accountable those who choose to break the law. In this case, Cody M. Weyer has been held accountable for his actions, and we hope that his sentence will serve as a deterrent to others who would consider harming our nation’s wildlife.
