A Timber Lake man has been sentenced to probation and fines for passing a counterfeit $100 bill in a local bar.
Dennis Tyler Gutierrez, 21, also known as “Crow Shoe,” attempted to buy beer with the fake bill at the Coop Bar during the Days of 1910 celebration in July 2013. The owner, recognizing the bill as counterfeit, called law enforcement, leading to Gutierrez’s arrest.
Gutierrez was indicted on August 21, 2013, and pled guilty on October 1, 2013. He was sentenced on December 12, 2013, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange to one year of probation, a $500 fine, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Secret Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case.
Gutierrez’s actions were a serious offense, and his sentence reflects the gravity of the crime. The use of counterfeit currency can have far-reaching consequences, including financial loss and damage to businesses and individuals.
The sentencing of Gutierrez serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the law and protecting the integrity of our financial system.
