A Plattsburgh Man Has Been Caught Using a False Passport

PLATTSBURGH, NEW YORK – Manish Patel, age 43, and a citizen of India, pled guilty to use of a false passport, announced United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian.

According to court records, Patel admitted to presenting a forged Indian passport to Border Patrol agents in the early-morning hours of January 20, 2017. The passport was in another person’s name, but bore Patel’s photograph. He used the forged passport to fly from India to Toronto, by way of London, prior to illegally entering the United States.

Patel’s actions were a brazen attempt to circumvent immigration laws and gain entry to this country. His use of a false passport puts a strain on the entire immigration system and undermines the integrity of our borders.

Patel faces up to 10 years in prison and up to 3 years of post-imprisonment supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. A defendant’s sentence is imposed by a judge based on the particular statute the defendant is charged with violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.

This case was investigated by the United States Border Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Cyrus P.W. Rieck.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 16, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. before Senior United States District Judge Norman A. Mordue. The public is invited to attend and observe the sentencing hearing.
