Two previously convicted felons, including an armed career criminal, have been sentenced to prison on gun charges in federal court in Alabama.
Marcus Thompson, 35, of Mobile, Alabama, was sentenced to 97 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Thompson was arrested in 2023 after he was caught carrying a gun in a Savannah mall.
Thompson has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for armed robbery and burglary. He was previously sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2015 for armed robbery.
Additionally, Thompson was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and sentenced to 5 years in prison in 2018.
Thompson’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Kristi DuBose, who noted that Thompson’s ‘prior record of convictions demonstrates a blatant disregard for the law and a lack of regard for human life.’
Thompson’s sentence will be followed by 3 years of supervised release.
In a separate case, 27-year-old Jamari Johnson of Birmingham, Alabama, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. Johnson fired shots in a neighborhood in 2023, causing widespread panic.
Johnson has a prior conviction for assault and was previously sentenced to 2 years in prison in 2019.
Johnson’s sentence was also handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Kristi DuBose.
The cases were prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan M. Gerstein of the Southern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney’s Office.
These cases are a reminder that the consequences of carrying a gun as a felon are severe and can result in lengthy prison sentences.
