A brutal assault in Bullhead, South Dakota, ended in a lengthy prison sentence for the perpetrator. On May 18, 2020, U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann handed down a 92-month prison term to 49-year-old Mario Crow Ghost.
Crow Ghost, a resident of Bullhead, South Dakota, was convicted of Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Substantial Bodily Injury to an Intimate Partner. The crimes were committed on June 3, 2019, when Crow Ghost, under the influence of alcohol, assaulted two individuals with a sharp object.
The victims, whose identities were not disclosed, received medical attention for their injuries. The first victim was punctured in the neck with the sharp object, while the second victim suffered injuries to the back of her leg.
Crow Ghost was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 13, 2019, and subsequently pled guilty on December 4, 2019. The investigation into the assault was led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirsten Jasper prosecuted the case, which resulted in a guilty verdict for Crow Ghost. In addition to the prison sentence, the court also ordered Crow Ghost to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $200.
Crow Ghost was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he will begin serving his prison term.
